With 50 years under its belt, Balticon has encouraged science fiction and fantasy in Baltimore city. Founded by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS), it aims to encourage, educate, and promote science fiction in all of its forms. This year will be Balticon’s Golden Anniversary, held in Downtown’s Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel. For their 50th anniversary, Balticon have decided to return to their roots of a convention located Downtown, but that’s not the only news they have.
A 50th anniversary warrants a very special Guest of Honor, and this year’s guest is a name that’s pretty well known in the fantasy genre. George R.R. Martin. The Game of Thrones author will be making an appearance at Balticon at the Feast of Fire and Ice. This banquet is the most prominent form of fundraising for the convention, which means that there will be a minimum donation amount to be seated at the table. The banquet will include the finest of Westerosi cuisine, with vegetarian and gluten-free options. There will multiple tables, each of which will have a head of the table where George R.R. Martin will sit. He will switch tables per course and converse with the table. Ultimate Dining Companions will be seated at the head of the table closest to the esteemed author. Space is limited, so anyone interested should save up for the minimum donation of $1,000 to dine at the table, and $1,500 for anyone who wishes to reserve a space as an Ultimate Dining Companion. The donations will cover your 4 day event membership and will also come with a Ice and Fire swag sag. Those who opt for the $1,500 dining donation get the swag bag, along with a gold leaf trim goblet, and a custom frame included with the Balticon 50 color logo print.
Those of us without thousands of dollars on standby get to enjoy an event that’s 24 hours long for 4 days straight. Award winning artist John Picacio will be attending as the Artist Guest of Honor. Picacio is a two-time Hugo Award winning science fiction, fantasy, and horror illustrator. His works include cover artwork for Star Trek and X-Men, as well as, the 2012 calendar for George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Many other attractions include live music, an art show, and, of course, the dealer’s room. As an added bonus, Balticon is bringing back its past Guests of Honor to celebrate its Golden Anniversary.
